OLR BACKGROUNDER: CONNECTICUT PRISON POPULATION OVER THE LAST FOUR YEARS | ||

SUMMARY
On January 1, 2011, Connecticut's prison population stood at 17,746, near the lowest total at any time during the last four years. The sentenced population, 13,578 inmates, reached its lowest point of the last four years on that date.
The Department of Correction's daily incarcerated population report from January 1, 2007 to January 1, 2011 showed that:
1. the total incarcerated population varied from a low of 17,742 inmates on December 31, 2010 to a high of 19,894 inmates on February 1, 2008;
2. the sentenced inmate population varied from a low of 13,578 on January 1, 2011 to a high of 15,465 on February 8, 2008; and
3. the unsentenced inmate population varied from a low of 4,011 on May 8, 2009 to a high of 4,772 on September 21, 2010.
TABLE
Table 1 displays the total incarcerated, sentenced, and unsentenced populations on the first of each month since January 1, 2007 and on the dates of certain events during this time period.
