Explanation

Section 501 requires municipalities to fully indemnify volunteer firefighters and ambulance members. It also broadens the indemnification mandate to include volunteer fire police. Municipal costs, which could be of significant magnitude, would be incurred to pay for legal representation and other costs of litigation involving these individuals.

Section 502 permits municipalities to provide a program of property tax relief for fire police, or an active member of a volunteer underwater search and rescue team. This could result in a minimal revenue loss to municipalities that implement the program authorized in the amendment.
