SUPPLEMENTAL NUTRITION ASSISTANCE PROGRAM (SNAP)

By: Robin K. Cohen, Principal Analyst

You asked for program enrollment data.

SUMMARY

Nationwide, SNAP (formerly known as Food Stamps) enrollments have been on the rise over the last few years, with sharp increases in the last 12 months. According to DSS enrollment reports, the number of Connecticut families (currently 8% of the state population) receiving SNAP climbed by 30.7% during this period, and since October 2007, enrollment has increased by 43%. In addition to the recession, the increases may be due to a recent rise in the program's income limit, as well as a benefit increase provided by the 2009 federal stimulus legislation.

While the state's largest cities generally have the highest numbers of enrollees, residents in many of the state's smaller towns have also increasingly relied on this program for nutritional support.

SNAP ENROLLMENT

Table 1 shows both the number of families (assistance units) and individuals enrolled, by town, as of October 2009, and what percentage of the statewide total and the town or city's population this represents, using 2008 DPH population estimate data.

Table 2 sorts the data by county.
